This review showed statistically significant increase in the chances of bowel intussusception 3-7 days after injection with Rotashield. The vaccination campaign was suspended due to this risk, and replaced with a new vaccine that also had a risk for the condition, but apparently slightly less. The chair of the vaccine advisory board at the FDA held the patent on the new vaccine at the time.

Abstract or Results, Key Passages

“The strong association between vaccination with RRV-TV and intussusception among otherwise healthy infants supports the existence of a causal relation. Rotavirus vaccines with an improved safety profile are urgently needed.”
