Intussusception after monovalent rotavirus vaccine — United States, vaccine adverse event reporting system (VAERS)

This study admits that bowel intussesception (the collapsing of intestines) after children are vaccinated with Rotarix against rotavirus. 108 children in VAERS had the condition, mostly right after the shot, and 44% of them required surgery. The shot is still listed in the CDC schedule.

Intussusception risk after rotavirus vaccination in US infants

This study admits the increased rate of dangerous adverse events after rotavirus vaccination (the previous rotavirus shot was recalled in 1999), specifically bowel intussusception. This event happened at a rate of 1.5 cases per 100,000 kids vaccinated. It is a life-threatening side effect that usually requires surgery and can result in death.

Intussusception risk and disease prevention associated with rotavirus vaccines in Australia’s National Immunization Program

Authors found a relative risk of almost 7 times the risk of bowel intussusception after Rotarix injection, with a sustained significant risk after the second dose as well. In their second analytical approach, the risk was 15x increase in the event in the week after the first dose.
